6 Best Equestrian Communities in South Carolina

Many are familiar with the bond between a man and his dog, but not all get to experience the bond between human and horse. In the rare case that you are one of the lucky few, you truly understand what it takes to enrich the lives of your horses, as well as fully embrace your passion for equestrian sports.

Numerous communities in the Carolinas offer exceptional care for horses, miles of riding trails, state-of-the-art stables, as well as luxury living and amenities for horse owners. Continue reading to familiarize yourself with six of the best equestrian communities in South Carolina.

1. Palmetto Bluff

Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina is home to Longfield Stables, a well-renowned equestrian facility located on a 173-acre farm within the community gates. Guests of the Montage at Palmetto Bluff can utilize the boarding facilities and 10 miles of riding trails; while residents and members have full access to the spacious stables in the main and receiving barns, FEI regulation outdoor dressage arena, covered arena, training facility, and five-acre turf event field.

For the horses at Longfield Stables, pampered is an understatement. All horses are fed high-quality meals and cared for by loving and experienced staff. When they’re not gallivanting through the fields or the ten acres of available trails, they are able to rest comfortably in spacious stalls that are refreshed multiple times throughout the day. A healthy horse is a happy horse, after all!

Luxury living doesn’t end at the stables. Residents of Palmetto Bluff also have access to the finest amenities in the Lowcountry. From clay shooting and fishing, to nature walks and kayaking, Palmetto Bluff embraces the local flora and fauna to provide an unmatched, and slow-paced lifestyle for humans and horses alike. Not to mention, you’re only a half-hour’s drive from Hilton Head Island, allowing a peaceful day on the coast whenever the ocean calls.

Suggested4 Reasons Why the Lowcountry is an Equestrian’s Dream

2. Tod’s Hill

Known as the “closest equestrian community to downtown Aiken,” Tod’s Hill is an idyllic community for those looking for a quiet, ranch lifestyle. Tod’s Hill boasts rolling hills and miles of private trails, giving you and your horse plenty of room to roam.

Unlike other equestrian communities in South Carolina, Tod’s Hill doesn’t provide on-site stables or training facilities for your horse. Rather, the spacious terrain grants ample lot sizes to build the ranch of your dreams. Custom homesites and large acreage aside, the greatest appeal of Tod’s Hill is its proximity to downtown Aiken. A mere 10 minutes from the heart of “The Sporting South,” you’re never too far from shopping, dining, and family-friendly fun.

3. Keowee Vineyards at The Cliffs

If the mountains are calling you and your horse home, look no further than The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards. Located in Salem, South Carolina, the Keowee Vineyards community offers some of the most breathtaking mountain views in the South, including more than 200 miles of riding trails in the Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area — named one of the “World’s Last Great Places” by National Geographic Traveler.

The Keowee Vineyards Equestrian Center includes a 10-stall barn, full boarding services, green pastures for grazing, a riding arena, and a training pen. Horses receive expert care, with regular stall clean outs and an automatic watering system to keep them clean and refreshed. Keowee Vineyards also offers a luxury lifestyle for its members, with miles of lake shore and mountain terrain to explore, and exclusive amenities and events for its club members.

4. Fox Hollow

A few miles past Tod’s Hill rests the Fox Hollow equestrian community, a mere 12 miles from downtown Aiken and 15 miles from Augusta. For horse enthusiasts, Fox Hollow offers much of what you need — an equitation ring, dressage arena, jumper ring, cross-country course, and miles of riding trails along the wooded Boyd Pond Park.

A majority of homeowners visit Fox Hollow during the winter months due to the mild climate, but some choose to live there full-time. Many residents describe the gated community as close-knit with a collective passion for riding. Although luxury human amenities are limited, Fox Hollow spares no effort or expense when it comes to caring for your horse.

5. Anderson Farms

Home to the Aiken Steeplechase, the Anderson Farms community offers residents a blend of upscale living and outdoor adventure. Whilst this community is not purely centered around equestrians, Anderson Farms offers a variety of conveniences for those with horses, including riding trails and a casual riding ring. The larger properties within Anderson Farms range from two to 10 acres, making them the most ideal for horse owners.

However, Longfields Stables at Palmetto Bluff boasts “an incredible 173 acres of land,” making it a place unlike any of the other equestrian communities in South Carolina.

6. Moss Creek

If riding is your passion and improvement is what you seek, Moss Creek is another equestrian community in South Carolina. Focused on lessons, Moss Creek offers residents and guests the opportunity to hone their craft at either a beginner, intermediate, or advanced level. Classes occur all throughout the year, so there is always an opportunity to advance. In addition to lessons, Moss Creek Stables also offers boarding services as well as events for the whole family.

Unlike others on this list, Moss Creek is primarily known as a golf community, rather than a dedicated equestrian community. Although residents can take full advantage of the stables, homeowners may find it challenging to accommodate their steeds full-time, as there are no long-term lodging options for horses.
