Which Has the Better Beach: Myrtle or Hilton Head?

Written by Palmetto Bluff

Deciding Between Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach

With so many beautiful beaches in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, it can be hard to choose which one you’d like to make your vacation destination. All beaches are not the same, especially Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach, and it’s important to consider what you value as a vacation-goer. Thankfully, with 187 miles of coastline just in South Carolina, you have many beaches to choose from.

Two of the most popular and highly favored beaches in South Carolina are Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach. However, if you had to choose, which one has the better beach? Let’s explore all the characteristics of each beach that will lead us to the decision between Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach.

Hilton Head

Off the coast of South Carolina, Hilton Head Island is a calming beach paradise all year-round. With more than 12 miles of pristine white sandy beaches, Hilton Head is perfect for leisurely strolls, family bike excursions, and adventurous wildlife watching.

Private Paradise

If you’re looking for more of a secluded calming environment, Hilton Head is where you’ll find it. The surrounding towns of Hilton Head are quite small without too much hustle and bustle. Most restaurants and shops close fairly early so there is not much of an active nightlife.

With hardly any outdoor noise to drown out the natural scenery, you can hear and feel the sea breeze or the enormous, majestic oak trees rustling in the winds. If you listen closely, you may hear the peaceful chirps of Lowcountry cicadas. Overall, if you’re looking for a beach with serene scenery, Hilton Head meets the criteria.

Family Fun

Not only does Hilton Head promote a tranquil environment, but it has also been named one of the most family friendly destinations in the United States. Children can safely splash around in the shallow waters while parents watch from an obstructed view as the beaches are not very crowded, even during the summer season.

There are also many outdoor activities, you and the family can take part in such as biking, horseback riding, lighthouse tours, and so much more. Adults and children alike can always find something to do based on their personal preferences and desires.

Reserved for Adults

When you need to sneak away from the kiddos for a while, Hilton Head offers adults a plethora of activities. With more than 23 championship courses, pick up a round of golf in the early morning. Hilton Head’s golf courses offer breathtaking views of the Lowcountry scenery, framed by natural surroundings.

If you want to relax every aspect of your mind and body, head over to a wellness spa and enjoy a refreshing facial or relaxing massage. End your day with an upscale dining experience like no other. Hilton Head houses many fine dining establishments that provide fresh and delectable cuisine giving you a taste of the Lowcountry.

Myrtle Beach

Among the most visited places in the country, Myrtle Beach is a big tourist destination known for its miles of brown sand beaches, renowned boardwalk and pier, and eccentric dining options. If you’re looking for entertainment in all forms, Myrtle Beach is your ideal vacation destination.

Meet at the Boardwalk

There is so much to see and do on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. From the boardwalk, you can access the sandy shores or explore the surrounding shops and eateries. Also featured on the boardwalk is the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel. Soaring at 187 feet tall, the sky wheel allows you to witness panoramic vistas of the entire beach.

Exciting Nightlife

Along with stunning views, the beaches are ideal for vacationers who wish to meet new people and celebrate every night. Myrtle Beach hosts 19 million visitors every year making for an exciting nightlife. As mentioned above, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is a hub for nightlife as clubs and bars line the streets.

Fun for Everyone

Although Myrtle Beach can be somewhat of a party scene, entertainment and fun can be found for anyone and everyone. One popular attraction Myrtle Beach is known for is miniature golf, as the town contains approximately 50 mini golf courses. Other compelling attractions include Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing, both outdoor retail and entertainment villages with various options for dining and entertainment.
