As the sun sets over the picturesque landscape of Palmetto Bluff, we are grateful for the creativity that took center stage throughout the year. The 2023 Artist in Residence program has ended, leaving behind a trail of artistic marvels and inspiring stories. From picturesque painting classes to a Songwriters in the Round concert, the Bluff warmly embraced artists and art enthusiasts alike to revel in a diverse tapestry of creative expression. Let’s pause for a moment to recap the enchanting journey that unfolded during these immersive artistic experiences.
Spring saw Charleston-based painter Sheryl Stalnaker lead three diverse painting workshops, including an all-day immersive landscape painting workshop, an adult’s wildlife and pets painting workshop, and a fun-filled kids’ pets painting workshop. In April, Nashville songwriting legends Jim Lauderdale, Verlon Thompson, and Lillie Mae visited the Bluff for the first-ever Songwriters in the Round concert and songwriter masterclass. Acclaimed Lowcountry painter West Fraser joined us in May. During his residency, West treated attendees to a painting demonstration at Moreland Crossroads, held a book signing at FLOW Gallery + Workshop, guided an art walk at Montage Palmetto Bluff, mingled with guests at the Full Moon Rising on the May River exhibition, and took six lucky participants on an advanced painting excursion through Anson.
Summer at the Bluff was on fire with the help of Savannah-based fiber and textile artist Stella Ranae Von Schmid, who brought botanical dyeing to life, and jewelry artist Mary Frances Maker, who shared the art of jewelry crafting inspired by Palmetto Bluff’s natural beauty and using the ancient lost wax casting technique. In August, acclaimed artist Alan Shuptrine led a watercolor workshop for beginners, introducing them to watercolor painting techniques, an immersive intermediate workshop in Wilson Village, and a gilding workshop.
In the Fall, ceramicist Melissa Bridgman guided participants in crafting ceramic oysters, and Susan Mayfield led a pastel painting adventure capturing the Lowcountry sunset. Burls & Steel’s knife-making workshops at the Palmetto Bluff Farm offered a hands-on experience in the art of blacksmithing.
The Winter season featured Cacky Rivers, engaging bird and photography enthusiasts in workshops “Birds by Land” and “Birds by Sea,” providing unique opportunities to explore and capture the natural beauty of Anson and the May River.
Thank you to all who participated! The 2023 Artist in Residence program at Palmetto Bluff was a journey filled with creativity, artistic expression, and memorable experiences for all.
