Anson Point In Action

Written by Palmetto Bluff

The newest golf experience at Palmetto Bluff is already drawing rave reviews.

As the third pillar of golf experience at Palmetto Bluff, Anson Point brings with it a certain lofty set of expectations. After all, it’s hard to follow something like May River Golf Course, the Jack Nicklaus-designed course that serves as a masterclass in clubhouse golf. It’s hard to top Crossroads in innovation when that nine-hole shot maker’s paradise already raised the bar so high.

And yet, Anson Point has already established itself as a worthy companion course to these two, owing to its ingenious Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design and its unique placement within nature, rather than among houses.

“It’s a completely different experience that our members have now within the three club option. It’s very dynamic, and I think the big selling point is the natural surroundings,” said Director of Golf James Swift. “May River is very rustic, and Crossroads is a great walking venue as well, but this being back in a seaside subtropical forest, transports you to different locations with each hole.”

From the majestic marsh views of the 12th hole to the 14th hole that evokes everything that made Coore and Crenshaw in-demand course designers, the beauty of Anson Point lies in its ever-shifting scenery.

“You wind through oak views into the woods and out to the marsh, and then you get to 17, and it’s a lovely par three that could be in South Carolina, or it could be anyplace by the sea,” added Swift. “It’s just so unique with all the palmettos around it.”

It’s the perfect addition to the golf experience that Palmetto Bluff Club members enjoy, and it’s safe to say that the membership has embraced the varied play and scenery of Anson Point.

“I think we had 197 players on day one, and we still have the most volume of all three courses. Yes, it’s the brand new, shiny penny that you have to play, but the neat thing I’m seeing is all of the repeat customers,” said Swift. “People come off the course saying they’re going to be coming back all the time because it’s such a unique experience. It’s very walkable and very playable.”

If you’re thinking about making history as the first person to get a hole-in-one at Anson Point, we have some bad news. As of this writing, there have already been three.

“Yeah, we saw a lot of fireworks there pretty quickly,” said Swift with a laugh.

Anson Point has already proven itself a great third option for membership, and to hear Swift tell it, the experience will only get better.

“We want to give people everything they’re used to in May River and then some, so there are a lot of other elements that have to come online,” said Swift. That includes “The Roost,” a turn house planned for a mid-February opening and then a mid-summer opening of a temporary clubhouse, “The Cottage”. “Every stage of development from now going forward is just going to increase the experience even more.”
