Bats on the Bluff

Written by Palmetto Bluff

The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy’s research doesn’t stop when the sun sets. A few weeks ago, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources biologist, Jennifer Kindel, caught a big brown bat in a mist net in the River Road Preserve. Check out the action here.

The River Road Preserve is also home to the northern yellow bat, an uncommon species in South Carolina, and the northern long-eared bat, a federally threatened species. The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy was the first to document a population of the northern long-eared bat in coastal South Carolina! You can learn more about this discovery here.

The Conservancy’s ongoing bat research has shown that there is a diverse and healthy population of bats here at the Bluff. Even better news is that each bat eats thousands of insects every night! You can encourage bats to dine in your yard by adding a bat house like the one BatBnB donated to the Conservancy. You can order one of the ultra chic models here.
