The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy creates opportunities for Members and Conservancy supporters to deepen their connection to the natural world, both within the Bluff and beyond. In October 2027, that spirit of discovery travels to Costa Rica for an intimate, nine-day adventure through one of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes.
Led by Palmetto Bluff Naturalist Aaron Palmieri and Costa Rican Naturalist Carlos Chacón, the journey will take just ten participants from the South Carolina Lowcountry to the Caribbean coast and the forests surrounding Arenal Volcano. Along the way, participants will hike through tropical rainforests, explore the canals of Tortuguero National Park, visit a Bribri village for a traditional cacao experience, and discover the remarkable wildlife and ecosystems that make Costa Rica unlike anywhere else.
In Cahuita National Park, days unfold among coastal rainforest and coral reefs, with opportunities to spot sloths, monkeys, toucans, and an extraordinary variety of birdlife. A visit to a Bribri village offers a closer look at the community’s traditions, sustainable farming practices, and connection to cacao, including the chance to make chocolate using traditional methods.
Continuing on to Tortuguero, the group will embark on an evening excursion to witness Green Sea Turtles nesting along the Caribbean coast, exploring rainforest canals by boat and walking beneath the canopy.
The adventure concludes beneath the dramatic silhouette of Arenal Volcano, with early morning birdwatching, rainforest trails, hanging bridges suspended above the forest floor, waterfalls, and time to unwind in natural hot springs.
With expert naturalists guiding the way and participation limited to ten participants, the Palmetto Bluff Costa Rica Adventure, October 14–23, 2027, offers a rare opportunity to experience the country’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture in a personal and meaningful way.
