Join us as we go “Behind the Bluff” with Adam Deiwert, Spencer Collins, Steven Potter, and Taylor Melton, exploring their backgrounds, the course’s design, and the unique features that make it a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts.

Before the course opens, take a look at what to expect!

Backgrounds and Vision

Adam Deiwert

Adam Deiwert, the Superintendent of the Crossroads 9-Hole Golf Course, brings a wealth of experience to the project. His journey from the cornfields of southern Indiana to the challenging landscapes of golf courses across the country is a testament to his dedication to the craft.

“Being young, I thought that meant I would be able to play golf all I wanted to, and I enjoyed working with my hands and being outdoors. It was a no-brainer for a career choice,” Adam shared.

With a background that includes working on notable courses like Trinity Forest in Dallas, Texas, and The Cliffs at Mountain Park, Adam’s expertise in golf course construction and grow-in has been invaluable to the success of Crossroads.

Steven Potter

As the Golf Professional at Palmetto Bluff, Steven Potter has been an integral part of the team for over a decade. His journey started at the age of 15, working at a state park, driven by the desire to play golf for free. Over the years, Steven has evolved from an Assistant Golf Professional to a key figure in the development of the Crossroads course.

“Such a happy adventure to be able to start a 9-hole course with people who have proven themselves as valuable members of the team…A collaborative effort from passionate and driven people will lead us to success,” Steven emphasized.

His passion for creating something special is evident, and he shared insights into how the new 9-hole course caters to both seasoned players and beginners, providing a flexible and adaptable experience.

Spencer Collins

Spencer Collins, part of the Crossroads team, shed light on the impact the 9-hole course will have on the overall golf experience. “Works well for both ends of the spectrum. Can play it backward. Flexible and adaptable for seasoned players, can start the course from anywhere,” he explained.

In terms of design challenges, Spencer highlighted the unique aspect of Crossroads being a reversible course, presenting a unique take on routing and traffic management. The creative and flexible aspects of the course are sure the excite members with its daily changes and interesting challenges.

Taylor Melton

Taylor Melton, the 1st Assistant Superintendent on the Crossroads team, provided a local perspective, having worked at Palmetto Bluff since the age of 18. His journey from grounds crewman to a key player in the course’s development showcases the opportunities for growth within the Palmetto Bluff community.

Discussing challenges, Taylor emphasized the need for crew training to effectively utilize the variety of tee locations. Additionally, he expressed excitement about the shootouts at the end of tournaments, where golfers can hit from a massive tee box overlooking several greens—a unique feature that adds a thrilling dimension to the golfing experience.

Design and Layout

Crossroads, a 60-acre reversible golf course, creatively tackles challenges outlined by Adam Deiwert, ensuring a seamless experience for 18 holes. Spencer Collins emphasizes its unique flexibility, while Taylor Melton adds excitement with shootouts from a massive tee box.

With these course elements in constant flux – and keeping players on their toes – Crossroads stands out with King-Collins’ inspired design, featuring creative elements like signature railroad ties.

Challenges and Opportunities

Adam Deiwert provided valuable insights into the unique challenges and opportunities presented by Crossroads. Being a reversible course on a compact footprint of about 60 acres, the design required creativity to fit 18 holes. Challenges during the growth process included ensuring a seamless golfing experience on the innovative layout.

Exciting Variety and Flexibility

One of the standout features of Crossroads, as Spencer Collins highlights, is its variety. With no designated tee markers, golfers can play from wherever they choose, fostering a sense of creativity and uniqueness in every round. The course’s flexibility caters to golfers of all skill levels, making it an enjoyable experience for both seasoned players and beginners.

Tee Box Dreams and Shootouts

Taylor Melton shared his excitement about the shootouts at the end of tournaments, where golfers can hit from a massive tee box overlooking several greens. This unique feature allows golfers to pick and hit several greens—all from the same location, adding an extra layer of excitement to the golfing experience.

Unique Challenges

One of the challenges highlighted by Adam Deiwert is getting golfers comfortable and familiar with the reversible nature of the course. The close proximity of greens and tees for the different routings requires a shift in traditional golf mindset, presenting a unique challenge for both the golfers and the maintenance team.

Design Inspiration

Adam Deiwert shed light on the design inspiration behind Crossroads, mentioning that hole #4 is modeled after a course in California from the 1950s. The architects, King-Collins, draw inspiration from various courses worldwide, integrating creative elements to make Crossroads stand out. The use of railroad ties, a signature of King-Collins, exemplifies their ability to adapt and create unique features for each course.
