Behind the Design: Geometric Patterns

Written by Palmetto Bluff

A popular interior design trend, geometric patterns have been used in interiors and architecture for centuries. And for good reason. Patterns, prints, and geometric shapes are not only versatile, they allow the creation of a wide range of designs that can accommodate varying styles and tastes. Using defined repeating shapes, geometric patterns not only add interest, they also create a sense of order resulting in a soothing effect to the eye.

This Moreland Cottage built by Brightwater Homes and part of the Builder Guild Collection is a beautiful example of how geometric patterns are used in a variety of ways, yet sparingly so as to not overstimulate. (Think: less is more.)

From wallpaper and backsplashes to beautiful rugs, furniture, and other textiles, interior designer Mikaelah Seifrit from Southern Grace Interiors demonstrates how geometric patterns are timelessly elegant – giving a unique touch of sophistication and style to this Lowcountry home.

Living Room=

The diamond motif is introduced as you enter the home in both color and texture. The bold pattern of the rug beautifully complements the geometric chair and pillows, successfully combining complex shapes in this peaceful space.

kitchen backsplash=

The backsplash is a stand out in this bright and cheerful white kitchen. Natural marble, in an intricate diamond pattern, adds texture and interest without being visually distracting.

Seating Area=

Diagonal lines are repeated in the seating area in both textiles and the whimsical table base.

bedroom=

The neutral, monochromatic palette, combined with a generous use of white, allow different patterns to blend effortlessly in this soothing bedroom.

Bedroom Chevron=

Chevron takes center stage in this room, shown in the headboard, mirror, and rug. Varying the scale and tone ensures the pattern doesn’t overwhelm the space, while the large format landscape creates balance with soft lines and color.

Bathroom Tile

Restraint is the key to success in this beautiful shower. Using a bold pattern, but with subtle, tonal colors, creates graceful visual interest. The effect is a high-impact accent that feels soothing and luxurious.

Bedroom Curtains=

Drapery panels and decorative pillows add just the right amount of pattern to this rich and welcoming space.

Kitchen Wallpaper=

A whimsical wallpaper with a stylized take on a chevron pattern highlights this petite kitchenette, demonstrating that big design can come in small packages.
