In this feature, we shine a spotlight on Kyle Barney, the Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club Director, who brings his extensive background in Military Law Enforcement and passion for shooting sports to create unforgettable experiences for members and guests.
In an exclusive interview, Kyle graciously shares his journey, recounting his deep-rooted passion for shooting, his serendipitous arrival at Palmetto Bluff, and the profound impact he has had on the Shooting Club. Moreover, he unveils his visionary plans to expand the club’s activities, reaching beyond the realm of the ordinary, and offering experiences that will captivate and inspire not just the typical shooter, but all of Palmetto Bluff.
Kyle Barney’s journey to the Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club began with a lifetime of adventure and a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. Growing up in Chepachet, Rhode Island, Kyle was an active young man who enjoyed a wide range of activities, from dirt biking and football to snow skiing and Martial Arts. After exploring different paths, Kyle found his calling in the Marine Corps, a path that perfectly combined his physical prowess and dedication to serving others.
Kyle has a distinguished military background that spans over a decade. He began his service in the Marine Corps in 2003, completing boot camp in San Diego, California. After Boot Camp, he went on to be a Correctional Specialist at Camp Pendleton Base Brig. Then, in 2007, Kyle changes his job path to be a Military Police Officer and was stationed at Camp Lejeune. During this time, he was in charge of the department Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, Non-Lethal Weapons training, and Patrol Rifle and Pistol Training program.
While at Camp Lejeune, Kyle’s dedication led to his deployment to Okinawa, Japan, where he served as a field Military Policeman. They focused on security patrolling, convoy security, airfield security, and even Jungle Warfare training. In addition to also law enforcement duties, he excelled as a teacher, instructing other units on security and crowd control tactics, and Martial Arts. Kyle’s expertise extended to the role of Battalion Non-Lethal Weapons Instructor, and deployed to Afghanistan a part of a Security Force Assistance Advisor Team where their team was embedded with the local Afghanistan Uniformed Police where they worked side by side, teaching and instructing them on weapons tactics and police operations. In 2014, he assumed the position of Senior Enlisted Advisor for a detachment of 60 reserve Military Policemen at Inspector Instructor Duty on Camp Pendleton. During this time, he completed specialized training in the Special Reactive Team (SRT) and also went on to become a Special Reaction Team Marksman/Observer.
In 2018, Kyle and his family relocated to Bluffton, South Carolina, where he took on the role of assistant Operations Chief for both the Marine Corps Air Station and Parris Island, showcasing his leadership capabilities. Additionally, he voluntarily managed the base consolidated armory program, displaying his commitment to excellence and responsibility.
In 2023, after completing his service, Kyle settled into civilian life and began working with Primal Graphics. Installing custom wraps to golf carts, vehicles, and dirt bikes. Soon after, Kyle’s wife introduced him to Palmetto Bluff, where she works as an Experienced Planner for Montage Palmetto Bluff. Instantly captivated by the beauty of the property and its offerings, Kyle visited the Shooting Club and met a gentleman who mentioned they were seeking a new Shooting Club Director. Intrigued by the opportunity to combine his passion for shooting and outdoor experiences, Kyle wasted no time in applying for the position.
As the new Shooting Club Director, Kyle is dedicated to continually enhancing the club’s offerings, ensuring members and guests have unparalleled experiences. With the completion of a new clubhouse, Kyle has meticulously planned the layout to maximize member comfort and convenience. The gun room will soon be be redesigned to provide ample space for cleaning and maintenance, with guns displayed at eye level. The 3D archery course has been relocated to a more exciting area, and a slingshot course with interactive targets will soon be introduced. Additionally, a new axe-throwing will be built in the area near the clubhouse and will soon host an axe-throwing league for groups, offering a unique and thrilling experience.
The Shooting Club is not just a place for shooting enthusiasts; it’s a community that celebrates camaraderie and friendly competition. Kyle and his team organize a range of events throughout the year to cater to all skill levels and interests. The Shells & Chardonnay event, held on the first Wednesday of every month, provides an opportunity for all the woman shooters to come learn, engage in friendly competition, and experience fun times with fellow members. On the third Thursday of each month, the Clay Camp challenges participants with creative shooting scenarios, followed by food, beverages, and camaraderie. The club also hosts themed events during the holidays, and there are plans to expand with more tournaments, training clinics, and additional exciting surprises.
Looking ahead, the Shooting Club has a grand vision for its future, with Kyle Barney leading the charge. As the Shooting Club Director, he aims to establish the club as the premier shooting destination in the region, continually improving offerings and introducing new experiences. In September, mark your calendars for “The John Hopper Memorial on the Bluff” event, followed by a special event at Longfield Stables’ Cross Country Field the following day. These events will showcase the Shooting Club’s commitment to honoring traditions while embracing innovation and fostering a sense of community.
The Shooting Club has teamed up with Red Bluff, a nearby plantation, to provide its members with opportunities for a 20-person dove hunt and ten 4-person quail hunts during the hunting season. After the hunt, their 5-star chef will prepare an abundant feast of Low Country cuisine. These exclusive invitations will allow members and staff to visit the beautiful Red Bluff Plantation for an exciting day of hunting, with the goal of strengthening their relationship for future events.
Kyle Barney’s passion for shooting, combined with his military background and dedication to excellence, has positioned him as an exceptional leader for the Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club. His expertise and vision have already begun to shape the club into a destination that offers much more than just shooting facilities. Under his guidance, the Shooting Club is evolving into a place where members and guests can forge lasting memories, connect with like-minded individuals, and experience the thrill of the sporting life.
